Sun Protection

This is the most important product (along with a good cleanser, exfoliant and an antioxidant-rich cream or lotion) to use in our climate to prevent the signs of aging and the health of your skin.

• Sunscreen is formulated with ingredients such as:
  Avobenzene
  Parsol 1789
  Oxybenzone

These are products that must be applied 30 minutes before heading outside.  They work by absorbing the sun's rays before they have a chance to cause damage to skin cells. 

• Sunblock provides a physical barrier against the sun.  Ingredients include:
  Titanium Dioxide
  Zinc Oxide

They work by deflecting UV rays and are chalkier in nature, often leaving an opaque, white tone to the skin.

Many sun protection products contain a combination of chemical and physical ingredients to provide the best full-spectrum benefits and to create a formula that will not leave you looking like Casper the Ghost.

Sun protection products with added antioxidant benefits provide the best protection as antioxidants prevent free radical damage caused by any rays that do manage to penetrate the skin (because even an SPF of 100 will only protect you 99% from UVB rays). Antioxidants also protect from the chemical reaction some sunscreen ingredients have when exposed to sunlight (and the jury is still out on whether or not these reactions can be harmful to the skin so it doesn't hurt to have added antioxidant protection for that reason, too).  If you don't have a sun product with added antioxidants, I recommend using Blissoma's Antioxidant Spray underneath sunscreen or sunblock.  This non-greasy lotion absorbs nicely and calms and cools the skin.  It also excellent to heal the skin after getting too much sun exposure on the face or body.

For those who are prone to stinging eyes when sunscreen runs or drips, I recommend sunblock instead.  Physical blocks don't sting like chemical ingredients can.
